Douglas J. Opel M.D.

Douglas Opel, M.D., M.P.H., is a board-certified pediatrician at the Pediatric Care Center at UWMC-Roosevelt and a UW associate professor of Bioethics and adjunct associate professor of Bioethics and Humanities. Dr. Opel is passionate about treating the whole patient. He tries not to stop at understanding a sick child’s illness, but also to understand his or her (and the family’s) emotions, aspirations, values and goals. He feels it is gratifying to see how much this often helps the healing process. Dr. Opel earned his M.D. at the University of Chicago. His research interests include provider-parent communication, health communication, public health ethics and clinical ethics consultation. His current research involves improving provider-parent communication regarding childhood immunizations.
