Katie Nielsen

Katie R. Nielsen, MD, MPH, is a board-certified pediatric intensivist who specializes in caring for children with critical illness, including traumatic and burn injuries, severe infections, and complex pre- and post-operative care. Dr. Nielsen believes that all children deserve the best chance of recovery and return to their typical activities. Multidisciplinary teamwork is necessary to provide the best care to critically ill children. Her goal is to foster a collaborative environment to support kids and their families during their recovery. Dr. Nielsen is an expert in managing pediatric critical illness. This includes managing all types of life support, including ventilators and other types of respiratory support, medications to support the heart and maintain normal blood pressure, dialysis to support kidney failure and all other modes of maintaining organ function. In addition to caring for critically ill children, Dr. Nielsen collaborates with providers in Peru and Kenya to strengthen health systems to optimize outcomes for critically ill children. She is also an Associate Professor in Pediatric Critical Care Medicine and an Adjunct Associate Professor in Global Health at UW Medicine.
